Amy has been busy this year after her wonderful writing collaboration with Ed Sheeran, she hasn't stopped, (& neither has he!). Amy has gone on to recently song writing with Geri Halliwell,
who sang our Amy's praises in her blog.

Founder & Creative Director of CW13,
Cheryl Beer, is particularly excited
to welcome Amy back.

Whilst  a student at Welsh College of Music & Drama, Amy performed her first solo gig as a singer songwriter  at Cheryl's first Women's Voices event at Clwb Ifor Bach, Cardiff, more years ago than either of them care to remember! lol!

'Amy has become an amazing performer: one of the best. I think her journey is an inspiration for everyone at the festival. We are primarily a platform for Welsh based women performers & Amy's award winning success, as well as her ability to personally capture the audience
  is a shining light.

She has a young family & manages to combine being a mother with being a remarkably warm, gifted singer/songwriter/musician.

Thank you Amy for continuing to support
Celtic Womenfest.
After her overwhelmingly moving set last year,
we simply can not wait to have her back!'

3.20pm: Pat Smith

5.10pm

End Poem
Our festival friend Bríd Wyldearth is unable to close the festival for us this year, but she has kindly agreed for me to read one of her poems Slow Dance which recently appeared on BBC 3's Britain in a Day and is one of my favourite poems, especially when Bríd performs it! I will do my best to share it with you as we close the festival for another year.

We will be hanging our lovely hands held across festivals banner, our 'Goddess' made by Carol Lovekin for Women in Tune Festival and kindly lent to us again this year. Thanks Carol.

And don't forget that our Knitting Rhythms Table will be open again today, or sew Blodeuwedd's Flower Cloak with Sam Collins

Sian James at The Celtic Women Concert Series

Many thanks to Sian James for her beautiful and stunning performance as part of out Celtic Women Concert Series in March finishing our second year of Winter concerts.

I'm so excited to tell you that she has very knidly agreed to come back to Celtic Womenfest 2013

Knitting Rhythms

Since finding out we wouldn't have a workshop space at the festival, I've been thinking about quiet workshops that can take place at the back of the music tent. We don't have a budget for any materials, we don't have workshop space, but I figured that if I put a shoutout on facebook the universe may well sort the rest out!

Petra Wood very kindly volunteered to be a collection point for wool & knitting or crochet needle donations at her work base, Aardvark's Wholefoods in 6 Llamas Street, Carmarthen:

Petra is a Homeopath running her own practice in Carmarthen. If you'd like to see her website, here is a link www.carmarthenhomeopath.co.uk

Thanks Petra.

Than Sarah Passmore contacted me to ask if she could help. She is now chasing everyone's ideas regarding materials sponsorship. She has emailed local and national businesses. In exchange for their wool and needles we will put their logo on our flier and write about them here on the blog ... so fingers crossed! Sarah will give us an update at the end of next week as to how it's going.

Thanks Sarah

Then I put a shout out to find people who would be prepared to oversee the Knitting Rhythms table at the 2 day festival: knitters and sewers who can support and give advice ...
get other knitters started.

One of the people to respond was
Deputy Mayoress of Llanelli,
Ruth Ferris- Price who put me in touch with
Michelle Williams.

Michelle runs a business Shelbyart which aims to give: Creative Mentoring used for Personal Improvement with a holistic and inclusive approach. Mentoring through creativity  .

The website address is www.shelbyartmycreativelife.com

Michelle contacted me and kindly offered to organise 3 women from her groups who would come in to represent Shelbyart and share with leading the Knitting Rhythms table.

Thanks Michelle

So then I put a shout out for ideas from people as to what we would do with the knitted pieces.

There were lots of suggestions but we wanted it to be something intergenerational, giving, useful, woman focussed ....

So we have gone for the fabulous suggestion by Maj Ikle to do Baby Blankets.

This will be good for the starters and less experienced knitters who can knit squares that more experienced seastresses will sew together.

Thanks Maj

CW13 Baby Blankets will be donated to
The Young Mums Projects in South Wales.

CW13: Keeping our children warm

For the more experienced knitters, we will be looking at contributing to Age UK with the Innocent Smoothie Campaign THE BIG KNIT

For the past nine years Big Knit supporters have knitted millions of little woolly hats for Innocent smoothies, with money from every bottle sold going towards supporting older people during the chilly winter months.

Since they started they've raised over £1 million.
25p from every hatted bottle sold goes straight to Age UK to help older people keep warm and well for winter.

So stretch out those fingers, get your needles out and untangle that wool.
It's time to get your knit on.

We will also make flowers at the table, knitted, crochet'd or sewn. This will be led for us by the lovely Sam Collins who has been 'growing'

Blodeuwedd's Cloak for us since The Story Telling Event last February, then at CW12.

The cloak will come to this year's Story Event in April and then through to CW13 in August ...

it will then carry forward to next year's events ... this way a little bit of each event is carried forward into the next ...

Thanks Sam

Thanks a million to all the people who have contacted me this week to offer to help by donating materials, to those who are excited about knitting at the festival, and those who are giving of their time to help me organise it.

I'm quite taken aback about how excited people are about knitting! I had no idea! Maybe we should have a knitting festival next year!!
Now, that's an idea!!

Meanwhile, there are other knitting events happening in Carmarthenshire. Thought I'd mention here that Lynda Lumb is organising a 'Knit Against Nuclear Weapons' Event on 31st July, This is the facebook link to the Event page if you would like more details:

And here is Lynda's email address: lynda.lumb@facebook.com

STOP PRESS! DATES FOR THIS YEAR'S FESTIVAL!

Cheryl Beer: Creative Director

After having a meeting with The National Botanic Garden of Wales this week, who have very kindly agreed to host and fund the infra structure of CW13 again for us this year, I can confirm that Celtic Womenfest will be on:

Sunday 25th August
Monday 26th August

How is it different to last year and why?

In response to audience, artist, volunteer, management and committee feedback from last year, we have made the following decisions:

Abertillery Ladies Orpheus Choir

Festival Times & Performance Slots:
Last year we opened at 11.00am to give more opportunites for women to perform but our audience did not turn up in full force until 1pm onwards, so this year we will be starting at 12.45pm.This will mean that there will be less performance spots.

This year we are having longer performance spots for artists.

Last year we closed at 7.00pm but this posed a few issues in terms of providing transport back to the main gate, as our very kind volunteer buggy drivers, who ferried people all day, back and for, finish at 5pm. So, this year, we will finish at 5pm.

Venue
Last year we had a very wet Summer and made a last minute decision to go into the Marquee, so we're keeping our options open this Summer, and if it happens to be warm, we are hoping to make the best use of the beautiful Garden, and use the Pineapple performance stage outside. If not, we'll make a decision the week before the festival, and maybe take it inside the Marquee again to keep us dry!

Requests to perform
Already I have been inundated with people who would like to take part, so this year, I will be programming differently. There will be slots for some invited artists and slots for those who write to me, but these are already almost full for the muscians. Please note that I don't usually book anyone for an Event unless I have seen their work and make every effort to come and see artists performing live.

Audience building
I would also say here, that one of the most important things, as far as I am concerned, is that all artists bring audience!

Setting up an Event is relatively straight forward, but marketing the event and making sure there is audience is jolly hard work.

If you would like to 'help out' this is the one area that I could really do with support. The Garden are brilliant and get listings in local papers, radio etc, put out posters in the Garden. I do the fliers and internet posting, and if you can help with this, I'd be blown away! I will also be recording a CW13 Radio Show again this year for those taking part to come as guests in the run up to the festival through the Summer.

We all like to perform to an audience and need to all help to 'make that so' for everyone! If you have a mailing list, tell them about CW13! Post on your facebook, Tweet!  Bring your family and friends ... the more the absolutely merrier!

Performers from outside of Wales
Since leaving a post yesterday on facebook, I have had requests for artists outside of Wales to come and perform. Celtic Womenfest is primarily a platform for Wales based women musicians & spoken word poets. That isn't to say we wouldn't look at guests from other areas, but our priority is Wales based women. Indeed we may have a guest from Sweden, and our Irish friends have expressed an interest also, following CW visiting & performing in Ireland, funded by Coracle in December last year.

Men!
Last year we had lots of men in the audience, and that's fabulous! The Event is a women's creative platform within an integrated mainstream, family friendly, setting and we welcome everyone!

With regard to the performers, as long as the woman is the main act, the front woman, we are not opposed to having male support musicians, although only one man performed at last year's festival supporting Jay Ryan to perform her songs, we did have David Jones performing with Kate Strudwick in the Celtic Women Concert Series, and Lee Mason performed with Lowri Evans ... but again, I would stress that our priority is providing a platform for Wales based women. In all these cases, the women were the composers/writers and front person.

Rhian Edwards left & Mab Jones right

Spoken Word Poets
Although the musicain slots are almost full already, I still have slots available for SPOKEN WORD POETS. These will be 5 - 10 minute slots between musician change overs, like last year. So get in touch. Maybe you run of a Spoken Word Event and would like to bring a group of women to take a few spots?

FAMILY AUDIENCE
Just to stress to all artists, that CW13 is a family friendly event and so you need to be sensitive to this within your material. There will be young children in the audience.

Workshops

Rachel Hargrave Drumming Session

We would love to end the festival like we did last year with a drumming workshop and then a sound sculpture but the workshops throughout the festival will need to take place in the same space as the performance, so quiet ones will work well, like the knitting that has already been offered. Or workshops integral to the music, like dance or tai-chi.

We will have an Arts Table again, as that went down very well with the children last year, it was a free for all/do your own thing' art table, but if there are artists that would like to offer their time supporting the art table, that would be grand.

So, if you can offer a quiet workshop that you feel would work well in the same space as the music ... give me a shout!

I think that's everything for now, but can I please advise you to join this blog for regular updates and program releases ...

Many thanks friends

Lowri Evans at The Celtic Women Concert Series

Lowri Evans will be performing in The Great Glasshouse at The National Botanic Garden of Wales, Sunday February 3rd at 1pm as part of The Celtic Women Concert Series.

One comes to know a good voice like an old friend. A voice so distinct and special that sings as easy as one breathes. The ear embraces them and notes dance like never before. Pembrokeshire born Lowri Evans’s voice is like part of the family in Wales, and her latest bilingual album, Dydd a nos, meaning day and night, will certainly extend that family way beyond the border.

Dydd a nos conveys the range of emotions and styles used by Lowri; from jazz, pop, country, folk and Americana and is Lowri’s fourth album, and her experience and musical maturity shines through. After performing non stop at Festivals such as The Green Man Festival, Wychwood Festival, Celtic Connections in Glasgow and The Acoustic Music of Britain Festival; performances supporting names such as Cara Dillon, Martin Simpson and Richie Havens; coming second in 2008’s Can i Gymru competition (Song for Wales); receiving a nomination for Welsh female artist of the year 2010 and making regular radio and television appearances, the album title also conveys Lowri’s busy lifestyle!
Dydd a nos is a delicate variety of songs that offer words of wisdom, such as ‘Rhywbeth gwell na hyn’ (Something better than this). “Don’t light a fire” tells a story of a relationship breaking down. ‘Torri syched (Quenching your thirst) deals with the challenges facing musicians when performing in noisy pubs. The sound of the ukulele and pedal steel guitar in ‘How do you do’gives us a taste of Hawaii and ‘Pob Siawns’ (Every chance) which reached the final 8 in 2010’s Can i Gymru (Song For Wales) competition, encourages the listener to make the most of every opportunity that life has to offer.

Previous releases include ‘Clyw Sibrydion’ (Hear Whispers) from 2006, recorded in the Welsh language and featured the popular track “Merch y Myny (Mountain Girl)” whilst for ‘Kick the Sand’ in 2007 Lowri decided to record mainly in English. In summer 2008 Lowri released a Welsh language EP “Dim da Maria (Not at Maria’s)” which featured her track “Ti a Fi (You and Me)” a song with which she came 2nd place in “Can i Gymru (Song For Wales)” earlier that year. A Welsh Christmas Single “Dagre yn yr Eira (Tears in the Snow)” was released in December 2008 this being the first release on the Shimi Records Label.“Disgleirio (Shining)” a 4 track Welsh language EP was released in August 2009 again on the Shimi Records Label and “One Way Ticket” her second full English language album followed in September 2009.

What makes Lowri Evans unique is her beautiful Welsh voice, distinctive and powerful delivering her highly original blend of blues, jazz, pop, country, folk and Americana. She has the wonderful ability to blend the two languages in both her live and recorded performances.

The Celtic Women Concert Series with Sarah Passmore & Jemma Krysa

Creating a Platform for Women's Music in Wales

The Celtic Women Concert Series continues this Sunday at 1.00pm in The Great Glasshouse with Sarah Passmore and Jemma Krysa ... this is a note from Sarah, written on her Facebook Event page ..

Join us on Sunday January 6th to kick off the New Year in style with some fabulous music in what is arguably one of Wales' most spectacular venues.

JEMMA KRYSA:

Jemma Krysa is an acoustic/folk singer-songwriter from Tairgwaith in South Wales. After releasing her first album at the age of just 17, Jemma and her incredible music have travelled the world, playing gigs in Hollywood and building a large fan base along the way. She undoubtedly has a phenomenal career ahead of her and we are lucky enough to have her performing at January's Celtic Women Concert Series.

SARAH PASSMORE:
Sarah Passmore is a young acoustic/folk singer-songwriter from Swansea, South Wales. She first appeared on the music scene 4 years ago and since then has mesmerised audiences across the UK. Her self-penned songs belie her age and she possesses a pathos and ability far beyond her years. Sarah will be releasing her debut album later in 2013.

Irish Diary 2

Up early on Saturday morning after just a few hours sleep for a wonderful breakfast meeting with Helena Mulkerns who works at Wexford Arts Centre on the Cacamilis Cabaret where we performed last night for their Christmas Dinner.

She was the brilliant host of the event and is one of the organisers along with the Arts Centre Manager Elizabeth Whyte and also Alex Caulfield.

Then we jumped back in the car and went to Ennischorty to The Presentation Centre managed by Mairead Linnen. What a beautiful venue, wonderful restoration .. this is the old Nun's chapel where performances are held.

When we were there an artist was running workshops with local children. Caroline also attended the meeting a local poet and artist as well as Aileen Lambert who organises a traditional singing project.

After a look round the stunning venue we went to the town council offices to have our meeting. Here we are looking at the beautiful gardens. Mairead organised for the local children to plant bulbs in the garden. What a wonderful way to give ownership to the children who will have so much joy coming back to the centre.

In the store cupboard are the huge puppets made at the centre for one of the town's parades.
They were made in a day.

Thinking ... wouldn't it be wonderful to make Celtic Heroine puppets like these on day one of our festival and then parade them on day 2.

Mairead then very kinldy organised for us all to go to the Ennischorty Castle Art Exhibition ...

where Caroline's poetry along with other poets sits alongside the art collection being exhibited.

We then followed Mairead for an hour and half drive over to Bunmahon to the Gealach Gorm Theatre run by Angela Mulcahy.

She has pulled together the community and managed to make a little theatre out of half a squash court ... on a shoestring, that offers regular productions and drama classes to the community.

It is also the home of the Songwriting Festival she organised this year and is going ahead for next year ...

Angela is also a film producer and she has been working with Sean Corcoran and 2 film makers from New Zealand to make a documentary on the Irish perspective of the artist Edith Collier who spent 6 months painting in the village in the early 1900's. The film was being launched at The Copper Coast Proejct in Kill.

We performed our Child's Christmas in Wales piece before the film in this absolutely stunning venue with a full house ... how wonderful to see the community all together to watch the film

Left to right this is Mairead Linnen, Deidre Starr with myself and Danielle. Deidre is one of the singers who worked on the sound track for the film and she performed a beautiful traditional unaccompnaied song ... we are hoping Deidre can come to sing with us in Wales.

We got back to the hotel very late indeed and slept for a few hours before getting up at 5am and heading back to the ferry in Rosslaire

Whilst on the boat I spoke with the manager and asked him to display leaflets on behalf of the National Botanic Garden of Wales which he kindly did and gave a contact so that they can always be displayed at the ferry.

I also spoke to him about applying for support to bring Irish and Welsh performers back and for across on the ferry to take part in the festivals and events that we had connected with ... he kindly gave me the contact details of where I should write to ask for support which I will be doing later this week

So as you can see it was quite a trip! In just a few days we made contact with so many amazing people and events ... magic created

Thankyou
